The interdisciplinary nature of the program here at the University of Pittsburgh was what first caught my eye. You have the opportunity to interact with scientists from many different disciplines in an innovative environment. I decided to come here for my graduate work because of the strong regenerative medicine I'm currently a 4th year student in the Cellular and Molecular Pathology program. I work with skeletal muscle-derived stem cells for cardiac repair after injury. In particular, I am focusing on the effect of donor cell and host sex and age on myocardial regeneration after ischemic injury in a mouse model. In addition, I am examining methods to improve transplantation, including mechanically preconditioning the cells and pretreatment with antioxidants prior to injection. Peer-reviewed publications:
