Brendan Giles
Year started program: 2006
Program name: Immunology
2002 - Biology, Loyola University Chicago

I selected the University of Pittsburgh IBGP for several reasons. First was the ability to choose my primary department after my first year from all of the different programs that are available. Second was my interest in Immunology and the University of Pittsburgh's long tradition of excellence in the field. Finally, my interests in infectious disease and vaccine development were a perfect match for the University's Center for Vaccine Research.

My interests involve how immune responses protect us from infectious disease and what we can do to make our immune system more effective. My dissertation project involves developing vaccines for highly pathogenic influenza such as 1918 "Spanish Flu" and bird flu.
