Juvenile Diabetes Mellitus: Epidemiology & Etiology

Description of projects available to graduate students:
Immunological and environmental causes for IDDM are studied in the families included in the IDDM registry of Allegheny County.

Techniques graduate student will learn:
Students would observe the technique for separating lymphocytes from whole blood, and assist in preparing samples for frozen storage in liquid nitrogen. These cells will be used for HLA molecular typing, while the serum is used for autoantibody ascertainment.
