As a member of Dr. JoAnne Flynn's laboratory, my researh project ivestigates the dual role of CD4+ T cells as effector and regulatory cells during the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Utilizing both in vivo and in vitro models, we are attempting to better understand the mechanisms that contribute to the host's control of the bacteria. The lack of an effective vaccine for the prevention of pulmonary TB and no reduction in the rate of new cases world wide makes it imperative that we work to understand the complex interplay between the immune response and Mtb within the host.
