Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the pathogen that causes tuberculosis (TB). Although Mtb causes 2 million deaths a year it only becomes active in 10% of those infected. However, when an individual becomes infected with both Mtb and HIV the probability of developing an active TB infection increases dramatically. It is well established that CD8+ T cells are involved in the maintenance of HIV infection and recent data in our lab suggests that CD8+ T cells may be involved in protecting cynomologus macaques from disease associated with Mtb. One of the goals of my project will focus on CD8+ T cell function in SHIV/Mtb coinfected cynomologus macaques.
