A Message from the Dean
Dear Prospective Applicant,
Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program.
The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has recently emerged as a
dynamic, fast-growing national leader in science, education and medicine. We
are looking for highly motivated students who can help us to build a legacy of
outstanding biomedical research that will advance the frontiers of science and
health care. Towards this end, we offer a culture of collaboration among
faculty and students, basic scientists and clinicians. The medical school is
located within a vibrant university district nestled in the heart of an
affordable and comfortable community. Pittsburgh is a major American city with
a long tradition of innovation and progressive thought; its people have a
proven track record of transforming creative ideas into action. Come join us
and discover the exciting opportunities for training in this diverse academic
community with people of varied backgrounds, experiences and intellectual
interests.
The PITT Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program builds upon core
principles of modern biology, encourages student choice, and provides in-depth
training in seven different fields. During the first year, which is dedicated
to interdisciplinary approaches, students engage in laboratory rotations,
choose a mentor and transition into one of our specialized programs. Our
courses and milestone exams help students to develop critical thinking and
communication skills, while introducing them to the key questions in
contemporary biomedical science.
