Program Description
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) provides stimulating and
rewarding research opportunities for undergraduates considering graduate
education in biomedical research.
The program is administered by the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program
(IBGP) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine - a premiere research
center in the historic Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The School of Medicine
provides an exceptional environment for students to gain research experience
under the guidance of internationally recognized scientists.
The SURP faculty includes over 100 active members in the IBGP. You may choose a
faculty scientist from one of the following programs in which to conduct a SURP
research project:
Using an interdisciplinary approach to learning, students have the opportunity
to study with faculty working in the area of their choice.
Eligibility
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program is designed for students seriously
considering graduate school or a career in biomedical research.
You may apply if you are currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in an
accredited institution of higher education in the United States. Preference
will be given to those students who have completed their sophomore or junior
year. If you are an international student, you are eligible if currently in F1
or J1 visa status.
Individuals from groups underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged to
apply.

Funding
All students receive a competitive stipend of $3,500 for the ten-week program.
Additional funding for housing and travel may also be available.
The early deadline for completing your application is February 1. The final deadline is March 1.
Strong applicants are encouraged to apply early as there will be a rolling admission process that begins Feb. 1st. Applications received after March 1st will not receive fellowship consideration. The program will run Monday, May 24
through Friday, July 30, 2010.
