The Shin lab uses zebrafish as a model organism to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of liver regeneration, focusing on the plasticity of two main cell types in the liver, hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells (BECs). Depending on the severity and type of liver injury, hepatocytes convert to BECs; BECs convert to hepatocytes. A better understanding of these phenomena will contribute to better strategies to augment innate liver regeneration in patients with severe liver diseases as therapeutics.
