Dr. Samira Kiani is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a member of the Pittsburgh Liver Research Center. Dr. Kiani's work involves designing novel gene and epigene editing tools using engineered DNA-binding proteins, such as CRISPR and zinc finger proteins, for in vivo therapeutic applications. Her lab employs synthetic biology to create genetic circuits that modulate immune responses and regulate gene editors' functions, applying these tools in cellular and animal models. Additionally, she investigates in vivo gene and epigene therapies using various delivery systems, including nanoparticles and adeno-associated viruses, aiming to understand tissue biology and modulate disease progression, particularly concerning immune responses. Dr. Kiani is a recipient Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2024 and her work has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. Beyond her research, Dr. Kiani co-produced the documentary "Make People Better," exploring the ethical implications of genetic engineering, and directs Tomorrow.Life, an initiative aimed at bridging the gap between science and society through storytelling.
